George Soros feels especially connected to those suffering from and resisting discrimination because of his personal history with discrimination. He survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary. His family survived the Holocaust only because they were able to hide their identities and help others do the same. After he made his fortune in the United States, Soros began his philanthropic work, beginning with donations to stop apartheid in South Africa. Now, the Open Society Foundations, founded by Soros, have a mission to make a “world that’s more open, more just, and more equitable for all.”
One current movement that Soros has his eye on is police killings of African Americans. Recently, Soros’s Open Society Foundations donated over $33 million to grassroots activism in Ferguson, Missouri. Ferguson was the center of large protests against police violence in the wake of the death of Michael Brown, a black man who was killed by a white police officer. These donations allowed the movement in Ferguson to become more organized and keep the protests in the headlines for weeks. Soros has also funded other similar organizations such as Representatives of Sojourners, a Christian organization that focuses on social justice. They held a “Hands Up Sabbath” where clergy members spoke about issues of race and police reform. The Open Society Foundations do not control these protests, according to the foundation’s director Keith Zimmerman. Read more on NYTimes.com.

Thor Halvorssen’s young life pointed him squarely in the direction of becoming one of the world’s foremost human rights activists. His Norwegian father was made a political prisoner in a squalid Venezuelan prison after exposing corruption among his government colleagues, and his Venezuelan mother was a gunshot victim during a human rights protest against then-Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
Shortly after his mother’s shooting,Thor Halvorssen created in 2005 the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) which is headquartered in New York. Its aim is to free political prisoners and to champion human rights throughout the world. The HRF has come under fire from some more liberal quarters for accepting money from people with overtly conservative agendas. However, Halvorssen says that he doesn’t see the conflict as long as the foundation’s money is used without preference to attack dictatorships both on the political left and on the right.
Despite leading a small organization, Halvorssen has established the leading annual meeting of likeminded activists, the Oslo Freedom Forum, which attracts human rights leaders and journalists from around the world. As a teen growing up in 80s London Halvorssen honed his freedom fighting muscles by helping raise awareness of the ongoing system of racial apartheid then still in place in South Africa. But the roots of fighting for the little guy reach far back into his family history. Halvorssen’s mother’s direct ancestors include both Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Latin America, as well as Cristobal Mendoza, the first president of Venezuela. So Halvorssen with his HRF is merely doing his modern-day part to extend the family tradition of slinging stones at the world’s political Goliaths.
Thor Halvorssen is a great person to look at when people are interested in human rights. There are a lot of human rights problems that people run into because they are not able to speak for themselves, and Thor Halvorssen wants to use his Human Rights Foundation to help as many people as possible. It is very easy for people to get help when they believe in Thor Halvorssen, and they can listen to him for information about how to fight the injustice that happens around the world.
The injustices that happen in all different parts of the world are happening because tyrants are allowed to do anything they want. They are able to stay out of the news because used to not have that much access to information, and now Thor Halvorssen can keep people in the news pretty easily. This is something that he is actually very proud of, and he is willing to keep talking to news organizations to make sure he is heard.
He talks a lot about the work that he does with the HRF, and he also talks about things that people believe are true that are not. He wants people to understand who they are voting for, and he wants them to be sure that the information they have is very current. There are a lot of people who are going to learn from what Thor Halvorssen says, and they need to keep watching because he has a lot of good ideas.
