First airing on POP on April 26, 2015 Queens of Drama is an American reality drama television series that follows former daytime and primetime soap stars as they develop and produce a new serialized drama pilot for television. It stars Lindsay Hartley, Crystal Hunt, Vanessa Marcil, Chrystee Pharris, Hunter Tylo and Donna Mills as a fictionalized version of herself. Since season 2, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Bree Williamson have been part of the cast as well.
Donna Mills, one of the first to sign on to Queens of Drama, began her acting career on television with six-month stint as Rocket on the CBS daytime soap opera The Secret Storm in 1966. In the fall of 1967, after making her film debut in The Incident, she gained a recurring role as ex-nun Laura Donnelly in the soap Love is a Many Splendored Thing. She remained on the show for three years until, in 1970, she left to move to California.
In 1980, she landed her most prominent role as Abby Cunningham on the prime-time soap Knots Landing and was a regular on the show for nine years. For this role, she won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Villainess three times in 1986, 1988 and 1989, her final year on the show. The reason she gave for leaving Knots Landing was because she wanted to take a break from acting for a while, and from Abby as well. A year before Queens of Drama began, in 2014, Mills joined General Hospital for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2015 for Outstanding Special Guest Performer in a Drama Series.
One of the younger cast members, Instagram super celeb Crystal Hunt, was especially inspired to join Queens of Drama when she heard the Mills had already signed to the show. Hunt is best known for her role as Lizzie Spaulding on the CBS soap opera, Guiding Light. She also portrayed Stacy Morasco in One Life to Live from 2009 to 2010. Along with former soap opera stars, Hartley, Marcil, Pharris, Tylo, Mills, Goldsberry and Williamson, Hunt is helping to work toward the common goal of creating, developing, pitching and producing a new soap opera pilot. Hunt has said on her Facebook fan page that the women genuinely enjoy working together and happen to really like each other.
According to an interview with Examiner, Hunt got called on to be a part of Queens of Drama while filming a movie with best friend and fellow actress, Dania Ramirez. She says, “They contacted me and said ‘Would you be interested in doing this?’ So the concept of putting on makeup and not looking like a producer who’s been out in the middle of nowhere was appealing.” Given her major role in Magic Mike XXL, Crystal’s star is certainly rising.
