James Dondero Highland Capital Management’s President. He is the co-founder of the company and has played a crucial role in Highland becoming a pioneer in developing the CLO (short for collateralized loan obligation) market. Under Dondero’s supervision, the company has come out with advanced credit-oriented solutions for retail investors, as well as institutional investors around the world.
Dondero’s career dates back to 1984, when he became an analyst after entering the Morgan Guaranty training program. Also in 1984, he completed his studies at the McIntire School of Commerce. He earned majors in both finance and accounting. What’s even more impressive is that Dondero achieved high honers. Furthermore, he is a certified Chartered Financial Analyst and a Certified Management Accountant.
In 1985, Dondero joined one of the most well-known companies in the world, American Express. He worked there as their Corporate Bond Analysis. Eventually he became a Portfolio Manager at American Express. In 1989, he left American Express to further pursue his career.
Before Dondero founded Highland, he worked at Protective Life’s GIV subsidiary as the CIO. The subsidiary grew to over a billion dollars under his leadership, and it was founded back in 1989.
Not only is Dondero the president of Highland Capital, but he holds other high ranking positions at various companies. He sits on the board of NexPoint, NexBank, CCS Medical and Cornerstone Healthcare. He is also a chairman on the board of MGM Studios and American Banknote.
Not only is Dondero a successful businessman, but he supports a number if charitable efforts. This includes the Perot Museum of Natural Science and Snowball Express. Others includes Uplift Education and the George W. Bush Presidential Library.
